Craft beer enthusiasts know that Asheville has been dubbed beer city. And the center of all the brewery action revolves around Asheville’s brewing district known as South Slope.

The South Slope Brewing District is located just south of downtown and is easily walkable from Asheville’s downtown core. It has a relatively small footprint on a map but is home to 8 breweries, so it’s a great place to brewery hop in Asheville.

The only ones that aren’t in the main area are Hi-Wire and Asheville Brewing, but they are just up Coxe Ave. It’s an easy walk between the areas (and you pass several great restaurants!)

You may be wondering why Bhramari isn’t on this list! They closed in 2023 and Terra Nova Beer later announced plans to open there. The new South Slope brewery will open in 2024. Keep an eye on our guide to Asheville openings and closings for additional news.

Brewery and beer garden oasis + great food in the heart of South Slope

Burial Beer Co’s South Slope location offers a taproom with a large outdoor biergarten, including picnic tables, old vehicles for exploring, and even a rooftop deck.

Their extensive beer selection features IPAs, stouts, lagers, sours, and more.

It’s also a great brewery for dinner in Asheville, with a full kitchen serving delicious burgers, sandwiches, and other bar bites.

Burial does not offer flights or small pours– full pours only!


Sour and funky beer haven with several flight options

Dive into sours and funky beers at the dog-friendly Wicked Weed Funkatorium.

Located in the South Slope neighborhood, this rustic taproom boasts 20 beers on tap, but don’t worry, they’re not all sours. They also serve the classic brews that Wicked Weed is known for and have 8 flights to choose from.

Don’t miss their elevated pub fare – Try the Korean corn dogs and Italian sausage sandwiches!

The outdoor seating offers an amazing biergarten atmosphere or cozy up inside with an old-world brewery feel.

Hi-Wire’s original location (+ an iconic mural!)

Head to Hi-Wire’s iconic South Slope taproom for a vibrant casual neighborhood brewery. This is their original Asheville location— and it’s hard to miss the bright rainbow facade.

With 20 unique beers on tap, including Hi-Wire classics, small batch brews and sours, there’s plenty to choose from.

Hi-wire doesn’t have a kitchen but they do allow outside food. There are plenty of great South Slope eateries nearby that offer takeout if you want to eat at Hi-Wire.


Brewery and pizzeria with a lively atmosphere

As one of Asheville’s oldest breweries, Asheville Brewing Co. has been serving delicious brews since 1997.

They have 14 beers on tap with timeless favorites like their Shiva IPA and Ninja Porter.

Not only is Asheville Brewing a great brewery, but it’s also one of Asheville’s best pizza joints. You can order whole pizzas or by the slice and they also have pub food.

The atmosphere at Asheville Brewing Co. is always lively and they are family and dog-friendly. There is a large space with indoor seating, as well as covered outdoor seating.


Large South Slope brewery The Green Mansion

One of Asheville’s most well-known breweries Green Man Brewing, housed in a three-story building has everything a beer-lover needs.

The ground floor is home to their brewtique where you can purchase beer and merch or order a beer at the bar to enjoy by the fire on their sidewalk patio.

On the second level, they have their brewing operations which you can see from the third-floor tasting room.

In the tasting room, you can enjoy some of Green Man’s timeless classics like their Green Man IPA or enjoy a specialty beer on tap. Not only that but you can enjoy that tasty beer on their 3rd-floor covered porch overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Green Man also has excellent pub food like loaded fries, burgers and fish and chips.


Green Man’s original taproom with a neighborhood feel

Just a half block from the Green Mansion you’ll find Dirty Jack’s, Green Man Brewery’s original taproom in Asheville, NC. This is where it all began in 1997 and today they brew specialty and taproom-exclusive beers at this location.

Dirty Jacks is intentionally unpolished making it feel like a neighborhood pub. They have indoor and covered outdoor seating and are kid and dog-friendly.

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, you can order Green Man Eats at the bar. They offer pub fare ranging from loaded fries to burgers and cheesesteaks, which are the perfect pairing to go with a cold brew.


Rustic neighborhood brewery taproom

Another local South Slope favorite is Twin Leaf Brewing, a fun neighborhood brewery and taproom with a laid-back atmosphere.

You’ll find 20 taps of Twin Leaf’s in-house brews inside their rustic taproom. In addition to great indoor seating, they also have outdoor tables behind the brewery on Coxe Avenue.

Twin Leaf doesn’t have an in-house kitchen, but you can order from Lil Chango next door via QR code and they will deliver to the taproom.


Great outdoor seating at a Western NC classic

One of Western NC’s oldest breweries, Catawba Brewing Co. has a taproom in Asheville’s South Slope. They offer a large space with lots of outdoor seating that wraps around the building next to Vortex Doughnuts.

Catawba doesn’t have the range of beers on tap that some of Asheville’s other breweries have, but you’ll still find some excellent brews.

Their White Zombie white ale and the Carolina Fog hazy IPA are both quite tasty. And if their Peanut Butter Jelly Time raspberry brown ale, you have to give it a try!

Note that Catawba Brewing doesn’t have a kitchen so it’s a chance to eat at one of South Slope’s excellent restaurants.
